Education And Development Service (READS) is situated at
Venkatapuram village in Thalli block of Dharmapuri District, TamilNadu.
Its present area of operation spreads over 75 villages partly
inhabited by the tribal community.
Towards achieving self-reliance in health care, a survey of medicinal
plants unit was established. The medicinal species are being collected
systematically from various forest areas to capture greater genetic
variability. About 20000 seedlings of 250 species have been
planted in Ethno Medicinal Forest including live fence.
The regional resource center of learning in the campus is promoted
with 500 herbarium specimens and 100 species of seeds and raw drugs.
A one hectare medicinal plants outreach nursery with a capacity of
producing half a million plants annually has been established to cater
the need of medicinal plants by local communities; probably one of the
largest of its kind in southern India.
Documentation of local health traditions reveals that 165 species
being used by local 252 local herbal healers to treat 121 health
conditions.
By training the animators to prepare herbal remedies and in nursery
aspects, more than 3000 kitchen herbal gardens have been established
in the operational area.
