The Peermade Development Society (PDS) is started to perform works of charity to help the downtrodden.
With the support of Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions, Bangalore,
India, PDS has successfully developed as
a Medicinal Plant Conservation Park. PDS has established an Ethno
Medicinal Forest (EMF) in 9.04 acres. The EMF augments more than 259 locally available medicinal plants.
PDS is also the
center of resource for 185 species of herbarium and 210 species of seeds. 99 medicinal plants raw drugs are
efficiently displayed in this resource center. To attain self-reliance in rural health care PDS has established more than 1761 Kitchen Herbal Gardens and trained the households in herbal home remedies.
Nursery with a capacity of 300000 seedlings serves as a backbone of PDS to fulfill the needs of farmers who are interested in medicinal plants cultivation. PDS has also documented the local traditional knowledge through interviewing 77 folk practitioners and 237 knowledgeable women households.
As an income generation program to local herbal gatherers, PDS has set-up Sahyadri Ayurvedic Pharmaceuticals. The Sahyadri Ayurvedic Pharmaceuticals now has a medium-sized Ayurvedic Medicines making factory with considerable production capacity. The company markets all its products in 5 Districts of Kerala. Currently, it markets its products through 2 wholesale distributors and several retailers. It also caters to the needs of its hospitals and retail outlet. Recently it has
developed 10 patent medicines, which are claimed to be of high quality and effective.
