Gandeepam,
a member of the Medicinal Plants Conservation Network is a leading
non-government orgnisation in the southern district of TamilNadu. It
is dedicated to furthering and promoting knowledge and understanding
of local knowledge and resources towards achieving health for all.
In
this connection, Gandeepam has successfully conducted an International
Siddha Congress in the recent past.
The
campus is enriched with more than 500 species of medicinal plants including species of
conservation concern and a nursery with a stock of 300,000 seedlings.
Its
programmes cover an outreach in 360 villages of 5 districts. Women
from more than 21,000 rural poor families undertake the Kitchen Herbal
Garden programme for self-reliance in primary health care. The women
self-helps are brought into a federation called sanjeeavani,
which takes up many income generation activities.
Through
medicinal plants conservation education programme, it has organised
100 green health clubs, exhibitions and demonstration of medicinal
preparations, which helped to establish 100 school herbal gardens.
It
has also organised village level health camps and exhibitions in more
than 150 villages. Gandeepam also houses a 10-bed hospital of
Indian traditional system with two extension clinics and is supported
by its own herbal medicine production unit.
